Architect: Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands
Product: Jesmonite AC730
The Project
Manufacturer: Simplicity Specialist Finishes Limited
Client: Exemplar
The architect desired a material that was more externally durable whilst also being more versatile when compared to traditional materials such as terracotta. A series of tubular, Jesmonite louvres have been fixed back to the solid spandrel panels adding texture, whilst also providing a level of solar shading to the glazed spaces. Jesmonite AC730 offered UV resistance, a lightweight fixing approach and major reductions in efflorescence, making it the perfect material for a project that benefits from natural light on all four sides of the building.
The building required a degree of shading offered by a typical, sculptural brise soleil layered across the façade.
“This challenging project required a completely new approach to what might be possible from moulded Glass Reinforced Cement. Whilst we had all the engineering, moulding, and casting skills we needed a material solution. Jesmonite AC730 was the answer. It flowed perfectly into the complexities of the shape, set fast and had the necessary high early strength to make this project viable.”
