Meet the very first Jesmonite ambassador!

Emily Marlin has been using Jesmonite for five years and has gradually grown her business – only recently giving up her job to make her creativity her living.

And we’re so proud! Emily, based just outside Cardiff in the Welsh Valleys, is obsessed with homeware, and has created all sorts of items using effects such as terrazzo and marble.

“I am so honoured to be the first Jesmonite ambassador,” she said.

“I am really excited, and it is nice to know that my work is of a good quality and standard that Jesmonite would like to be represented by me.

“I only finished my part time job last year and now to be an ambassador, I am so excited to take this plunge and share my love of Jesmonite with many other people.

“It is a good push for me to take me out of my comfort zone and it will give me the confidence to try different things.”

One of her favourite pieces to make and one of her most popular is the chunky arched bookends. In addition, the kaleidoscope collection uses waste Jesmonite recycled back into a new product creating the ultimate terrazzo.

Her work has featured in posts by interiors blogger Lisa Dawson and also in Real Homes magazine, the Daily Mail, Good Homes and the Independent – as well as being used in a photoshoot for Sophia Webster shoes. Emily plans to experiment a little more and start introducing geometric 3D art panels into her collection. She has enjoyed marbling and wants to explore combining different patterns and textures as well as block colours together and creating bigger pieces.

Where it started

She started using Jesmonite at Cardiff Metropolitan University on her Artist, Designer and Maker course. Students made 3D pieces with any material – ceramics, glass, clay, anything. The idea was that people found what materials they liked and what they wanted to do before going off into their own fields. Emily graduated in 2017 knowing Jesmonite was where her future lay.

Why Jesmonite?

“I was researching concrete and resin materials and Jesmonite was becoming more and more popular in the design field,” she said.

“I have always been a big fan of colour and that is what grasped me about Jesmonite, the vibrancy of it.

“I started experimenting and have loved working with it. It is so versatile to use, and you get different results with everything you do.

“Safety is also a really important thing, working with a water-based material is the way forward for materials so the eco credentials of Jesmonite were a big factor too.

“I am an impatient person so not having to wait a long time for it to cure was another aspect that I loved. I can cast something and finish it in two days, without having to wait for long drying times or use a kiln – it’s brilliant.”

Why Emily?

Here at Jesmonite Emily jumped out at us.  We spotted her online and instantly loved her great products. Her use of vibrant colours and the offer of products we’d never seen before – like her bulky bookends – really stood out from the crowd. We think she has impressive terrazzo work and thought she was one to watch as soon as we discovered her online.
