Richmond Hotel, Riverpool
When the owner of the Richmond Hotel in Liverpool wanted some intricate restoration work carrying out he called on Dave Lawton of Specialist Plastering based on the Wirral.
Dave and his small but hugely talented team have worked for clients all over the country on historic building restoration, providing bespoke surface finishes and ornamental mouldings and came up with some beautiful restoration elements for the hotel, including panels and an impressive coat of arms at the front of the building – with the help of Jesmonite AC730.
“I have known the owner of the hotel for a number of years and was asked to come up with ideas for the front of the building, something fancy and decorative but in keeping with its appearance,” said Dave.
“We drew up some plans focusing on the coat of arms and panels on either side of the door, which were approved, produced 3D clay models, took plaster models off that, then cast two copies in silicon moulds in an orangey, sandstone-like, colour using Jesmonite AC730.
“Jesmonite is an ideal material for us, we use a lot of it. It’s flexible, easy to work with and its ability to mimic any texture and colour so it blends in with its surroundings is a big advantage over other products. It’s also quicker – when moulding Jesmonite it’s rock solid the following day.
“Another important benefit of Jesmonite over other products we could use is that it is Class Zero fire rated, which others aren’t.
“We use Jesmonite regularly to colour-match and have used it in making Egyptian tablets at a spa because it is not affected by moisture.
“It’s so much nicer to work with than fibreglass and acetone because you don’t have to worry about the chemicals involved. I would always recommend Jesmonite and would like to see it used more. I believe more people are becoming aware of it and realising the benefits of using it.”
