Mouldmaking and Casting - Nick Brooks
We like to shine a spotlight on anyone using Jesmonite extensively in their work: our latest one definitely ticks that box, ensuring that the next generation of Jesmonite users are trained to get the maximum out of our incredible material.
Nick Brooks has been using Jesmonite as a basis for a series of training courses and educational books … for over 27 years!
Here’s his story:
Mouldmaking and Casting – By Nick Brookes has provided courses and commissions to students and clients across the UK and internationally, from countries including India, Canada, Iran, Dubai, Lebanon, Portugal, Holland, Germany, USA, Singapore, Norway and Iceland.
Nick has run courses over the last 27 years at institutions around the UK including, Central Saint Martins College (Central London), West Dean College (West Sussex), Study Sculpture (Brecon Beacons), Broadlands Art Centre (East Anglia) and Yorkshire Coast College (Scarborough) and a new course at The Hepworth Wakefield starting in 2019.
“We have also provided courses for companies including – Alec Tiranti Ltd, 3D Creations Ltd and Carvel Creative (Canada),” said Nick.
“Courses are suitable for many different levels of student from the complete novice to the more experienced who wish to hone or add to existing skills. We have enrolled students from many different professions including; artists, model/prop makers, architects, designers, prospective and current art students, hobbyists and completely unrelated professions.
“Students are taken through the basic principles, considerations, choices and applications of a comprehensive range of mouldmaking and casting techniques from the traditional to modern high-spec processes and materials. Students will explore the subject thoroughly with a view to their own practical application post course.
“Courses aim to provide a full and creative learning process, whether a complete beginner or the more experienced.”
When not delivering in-house training, courses are held at Nick’s rural Norfolk studio workshop, near the village of Stokesby and within the famous Norfolk Broadlands. The courses run over four days, for a maximum of four students. Anyone wishing to take part in the courses are advised to book early as courses fill quickly.
“We offer a complete range of mould making and casting ‘services’ to specification, with a 27-year history of experience and knowledge of our craft,” Nick added.
“Whether your project is big or small, we aim to provide a full service from initial consultation to full realisation and finish. We have a history of one-to-one collaboration with our clients combining experience, skills, sensitivity and attention to detail to ensure a thorough and professional job.
Nick has also published two comprehensive books covering the subject, ‘Mouldmaking and Casting’ (which has sold over 3000 copies) and ‘Advanced Mouldmaking and Casting’.
Projects that Nick has been involved with include: Sculpture and fine art, architectural installation and restoration, commercial and retail, theatrical, props, ornamental and gift and among the many casting services they use is the full range of Jesmonite casting systems.
